Construction Debris Disposal Guide for CT Contractors

By Pat Caruso, OwnerAbout the author

Quick Answer

Connecticut construction and demolition (C&D) debris is best handled with 20- or 30-yard roll-off containers, with weight allowances of 3–4 tons depending on size. Mixed C&D goes to licensed CT DEEP transfer stations; concrete, brick, and dirt require dedicated heavy-material containers.

Managing construction and demolition debris is a daily reality for Connecticut contractors. Proper disposal keeps your job site safe, your project on schedule, and your business compliant with state regulations. Here is what every CT contractor needs to know.

What Goes in a Construction Dumpster

Standard construction dumpsters accept the following materials without restriction: lumber and framing scraps, drywall and sheetrock, roofing shingles (asphalt, wood, composite), vinyl and wood siding, windows and doors, carpet and padding, non-asbestos insulation, tile, linoleum, and general packaging waste.

For roofing projects, keep in mind that asphalt shingles are significantly heavier than they appear. A standard 10-yard container handles a single-layer tear-off on most average-sized homes, but multi-layer roofs or larger structures need a 20-yard container.

Materials Requiring Special Handling

Concrete, brick, stone, and asphalt require dedicated containers due to their extreme density. A small volume of masonry can exceed safe hauling weight limits. These materials must be loaded separately — never mixed with general C&D debris — and require advance arrangements when you order.

Dirt, rock, and gravel follow the same rules as concrete. Stumps with attached soil also need prior arrangement. Call us before ordering if your project involves any of these heavy materials.

Prohibited Materials

The following cannot go in any dumpster: hazardous waste (paint, solvents, chemicals), asbestos-containing materials, tires, batteries, propane tanks, and medical waste. For a complete list, see our accepted materials guide.

Recycling and Responsible Disposal

Associated Refuse Haulers partners with local recycling facilities to divert construction materials from landfills. Clean wood, metal, concrete, and asphalt are processed for reuse whenever possible. Keeping materials separated on-site — clean wood in one area, mixed C&D in another — helps maximize recycling rates.
