How to Choose the Right Dumpster Size for Your Project
Renting the wrong dumpster size is one of the most common mistakes homeowners and contractors make. Too small and you need a second container — doubling your cost. Too large and you pay for capacity you never use. Here is how to choose the right size for your project.
Small Projects: 4 and 6 Yard Containers
The 4-yard dumpster is our most compact option, holding about 12 to 16 trash bags of material. It works well for single-room cleanouts, small garage cleanouts, and minor decluttering projects. The 6-yard container steps up to handle a full bathroom remodel, a basement cleanout, or a small deck removal — roughly 18 to 24 bags of capacity.
Mid-Size Projects: 10 and 12/15 Yard Containers
The 10-yard dumpster is our most popular rental across Fairfield County. It handles small home renovations, single-layer roof tear-offs, flooring removal, and medium cleanouts. At 3.5 feet high, the low sidewall makes loading easy — especially for roofers tossing shingles from above.
The 12/15-yard container is the sweet spot for medium renovations, multi-room cleanouts, and storm damage cleanup. It holds 4 to 5 pickup truck loads of debris without taking up excessive driveway space.
Large Projects: 20 and 30 Yard Containers
The 20-yard dumpster is the go-to for large home renovations, whole-house cleanouts, and mid-size construction projects. It holds approximately 6 pickup truck loads. For new home construction, major demolition, and large commercial work, the 30-yard container provides maximum capacity at roughly 8 truck loads.
The Golden Rule
When in doubt, go one size up. The marginal cost of a larger container is almost always less than renting a second one. And remember — heavy materials like concrete require dedicated containers regardless of size due to their extreme weight.
